LOVE IN TAIPEI
ONE SUMMER, TWO CITIES
Mei has ninety-eight days in Taipei. She has a language scholarship, a sublet in Yonghe, and a list of bookshops and night markets she will never finish. She also has a return ticket she has not told her parents about — the one that says she is going home to a job she does not want.
On the airport MRT she meets Jie, a Taiwanese-American graphic novelist on his way out of the city for good. They share a single stop, a single conversation, and an email address written on the back of a boarding pass. By the time Mei reaches her sublet, she has already started the email she may never send.
What follows is a summer of almost-meetings — bookshop afternoons, a typhoon, a midnight call from a rooftop in Da'an, a long wrong turn in Jiufen. Mei falls in love with a city and a person at the same time, and discovers that one of them she can stay for and the other she cannot.
Love in Taipei is a tender, sun-bleached romance about the summers that change us quietly, the cities we pass through, and the people we meet exactly as we are about to leave.
